Ruddigore

The cast

Many Sixth Formers as well as younger pupils (over 100 girls in total) have been involved in the impressive staging of 'Ruddigore', the Gilbert and Sullivan musical.

The plot is complex and the musical score demanding but all have done an excellent job and the colour and vibrancy of the first Act contrasted with the atmospheric castle setting of Act II.

The show is hard to stage, requiring a whole gallery of portraits to come to life in Act II! Much time was spent designing and decorating the elaborate set, which together with exceptional lighting conjured up a highly atmospheric scene. Taking part in a performance of this scale is something that will no doubt stay with the cast for ever, and the spirit of teamwork involved in an enterprise that brings together so many different artistic disciplines is unparalleled. There were some outstanding dramatic and musical performances and many girls and staff worked hard behind the scenes too.

The plot centring on the curse of the Murgatroyd family had scenes of great contrast - from the exuberance of the bridesmaids’ chorus to the eery appearance of the ancestral ghosts. The show delighted audiences at three evening performances and over 200 Year 5 pupils from local schools enjoyed the dress rehearsal.
