Meeting the Archbishop

Debating Genetics All the Students

Seven Philosophy and Ethics students attended a conference called ‘Faith in today’s world’ hosted by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Church House Conference Centre, Dean’s Yard London on Thursday Feb 4th. There were talks by The Revd Richard Coles, broadcaster and Curate of St. Paul's, Knightsbridge, Professor Elaine Graham, Grosvenor Research Professor of Practical Theology, University of Chester and Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. The Abbey School were instrumental in initiating the Conference and Dr Rowan Williams was keen to speak to our girls.

They were treated to a rare opportunity to engage with him on a number of issues ranging from genetics to his views on how we know God exists. Liz got into a deep conversation with Dr Rowan Williams about his views on Richard Dawkins. The Archbishop clearly enjoyed engaging with Liz on this subject and was impressed by her arguments which challenged the way he had presented Dawkins' account of the selfish gene earlier in the session. He was also fascinated by the students’ presentation on conscience and the recent Equality legislation.

In the morning we were delighted to meet up with an old girl from The Abbey, Hazel Williams, who took us on a tour round Westminster Abbey where she is now working as HR officer. It was a very memorable day for all involved.
