Rachel with her perfect 45 - 7 for each subject and maximum 3 bonus point. IB Celebration

In the first year of International Baccalaureate Diploma results at The Abbey, one of our 11 entrants, Rachel Lobley, has achieved the perfect score – a maximum 45 points. This feat was achieved by only 72 out of 49,000 candidates in the world and it is a truly outstanding achievement. Rachel will now read French and Italian at Oxford University. Two other students were also placed in the top 4% of candidates worldwide - Victoria Cutler who achieved 43 points and Katherine Savage with 41 points.

This was the first cohort at The Abbey to choose the IB while their fellow Sixth Formers opted for A levels. 60% gained 38 or more points - within the range requested for Oxbridge admission. All the girls performed strongly, scoring well above the average of 30 points, and have attained places at the universities of their choice for prestigious and highly competitive courses such as Architecture, Chemistry and International Relations.

One third of individual subject papers obtained the maximum 7 points and 77% were at grade 6 or above. Headmistress, Barbara Stanley said “We are thrilled with this first set of IB results which more than justify this pioneering decision and is testament to much hard work by the girls and their teachers.”

IB students follow six subjects at higher level or standard level for the two year course. The points awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Students can also be awarded up to three additional points for their combined results on Theory of Knowledge and their extended essay. The highest total that can be awarded is 45 points and the diploma is only awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, subject to performance across the whole diploma and satisfactory participation in Creativity, Action and Service (CAS).
