Abbey Singing Day

Abbey Singing Day

The Senior School welcomed children from Years 5 and 6 at nine schools for the first ever 'Abbey Singing Day'. The children enjoyed a number of musical workshops including practical percussion classes with Abbey music staff and practised together as a massed choir.

In the afternoon, parents were invited for a concert in which each school sang an individual item, The Abbey Senior Orchestra performed the 'Three Bears Phantasy' (which the children had studied in a workshop) and finally 250 voices sang together.

The highlight of the day was this whole choir singing 'Without Fear' by Julie Cooper, who had kindly arranged a special version of her song especially for the day. Julie, an Abbey parent, has composed extensively for Theatre, BBC Radio Drama, Television, Dance, media and Concert Hall and worked with the children on the day.

Director of Music at The Abbey, Mr Stephen Willis said, "Having the opportunity to make music is an excellent way of learning how to work together with others.  It also builds self-confidence through the chance to perform in public - it has been wonderful hearing such a range of pieces in our concert.  We hope all the children have enjoyed making music together today, and that they will take with them very happy memories of their day with us at The Abbey School."
